Review of “ROOM”/mirvish productions

Friday April 8th, 2022

Had the chance to see ROOM presented by Mirvish Productions  https://www.mirvish.com  at Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W. Toronto) and I have to say watching this 2 and a half hour stage show (including intermission) was a rollercoaster of emotions.  Based on Emma Donoghue’s best seller, ROOM is about a young women who was kidnapped as a teenager and forced for 7 years to live in her kidnappers shed (locked up 24 hours a day) where she is constantly sexually abused.  A child was conceived and to help him make sense of living there, she creates “their”own imaginary world.  ROOM taps into several emotions when it comes to what each character represents and presents, love, empathy , sadness, hate and joy. The three main Actors, Alexis Gordon (Ma), Lucien Duncan-Reid (Young Jack) and Brandon Michael Arrington (Super Jack) are amazing and the set design (with effects) & music (by Scottish songwriters Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett)  adds balance to the story.  I started out not liking ROOM but by the end, understood the story and applauded this great presentation.
