Review of “2 Piano 4 Hands” (Mirvish)

Monday June 13th, 2022

Had the pleasure of attending the classical musical two man comedy “2 Piano 4 Hands” (Mirvish https://tinyurl.com/yc38v6hv ) at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre (260 King St W) starring Co Directors/Creators Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt.  The show is about two boys aspiring to become famous classical pianists. The performance intertwines many many times for example, Ted will act as his young self and Richard his piano teacher, then it will immediately switch as Richard is his younger self and Ted the teacher, then switch as they both are back as boys hoping to become great pianists. Watching this they reminded me of great comedy duos of the past, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny(whenever they had classical music as part of their sketches) and Penn & Teller, but their magic comes from their amazing performances on piano (with music from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and even Billy Joel). They have fast interaction, excellent synchronicity and amazing comedy timing. Some of the conversation maybe a little confusing because they use “music terms” in conversation but the story itself …”very entertaining.”
