Review of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (Mirvish)

Monday June 20th, 2022

Had the pleasure of attending the six time Tony Award winning show (including Best Play)  “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (Mirvish https://tinyurl.com/h2fy6mwr  ) at Toronto’s CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre (244 Victoria St) based on an original story by J.K Rowling. This continuing story is set 19 years after Harry Potter(Trevor White), defeats the evil Lord Voldemort(Shawn Wright).  Potter is not only the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and married to Ginny Weasley(Trish Lindstrom)but also the father of Albus Potter (Luke Kimball). The story follows their awkward relationship while Albus, with his best friend Scorpius Malfoy(Thomas Mitchell Barnet), the son of Harry’s childhood enemy Draco(Brad Hodder) travel back in time to change a crucial event in Harry’s past, in order to improve the future.

This play is filled with Potter references from the previous stories so if you’re not a Potterhead, it might be a little confusing but the show itself is extremely entertaining enough for you to enjoy the 3 hour and 30 minute performance.  What makes this stage show all the worth while are the special effects. They are stunning, surprising and amazing(the second half is much better than the first but it’s all about the build up so stay right to the end).  Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is “Muggle Magic!”
