Review Of “Hamilton” (MIRVISH)

Sunday February 26th, 2023

Had the opportunity of attending the media night opening of one of the most decorated musicals of all time( It has won Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors) “Hamilton”(Mirvish) https://www.mirvish.com/shows/hamilton  at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W). A little background, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography with music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail & choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.  The story is about a forgotten American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton and his important  influence on the American War of Independence. So going into seeing this production I wanted to know, is it as good as everyone says it is?  Well, I can now say, yes it is. It’s one of the most innovative shows I’ve ever seen.  The music is incredible as the story is told through a musical mix of HipHop, Rap, R&B & Soul. Many of the actors are black and they are portraying white characters (something to remind yourself when you see this) and their vocal talents are astounding.  This is by no means just another musical. This is a production that’s all about breaking ground is every facet imaginable. You will definitely rise and applaud loudly for Hamilton. 5 out of 5 stars(and much deserved).
