REVIEW: LIFE OF P.I (MIRVISH)

Sunday September 15th, 2024

Had the opportunity attending the media night opening of the five time Olivier Award winning  (including Best New Play ) and three Tony winning stage show,  Life of P.I   https://www.mirvish.com/shows/life-of-pi  at Toronto’s CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre (244 Victoria St). Some background, the play  Life of Pi is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Yann Martel and was turned into a  stage show by Lolita Chakrabarti, premiering in June 2019.  The adventure/fantasy film Life of P.I premiered in 2013, received eleven Oscar nominations and won four awards. The sad story is about a teenager (P.I), who is the only “human”survivor of a sunken freighter that killed his family(they were moving to Canada after selling their zoo in India).  While trying to survive on a life boat, he realizes he’s not alone as animals from his family zoo become his companions including a Zebra, a Orangutan , and a Hyena.  But his adversary during this nightmare journey is a fearsome Bengal tiger named Richard Parker who causes life and death conflict with P.I. I have to say straight up I LOVED this two hour, ten minute performance, from the story, to the acting and of course the Lion King type animal special effects.   This stage show moves quickly, draws you in and is an emotional rollercoaster.  But by far the lead actor “Divesh Subaskaran” is absolutely amazing playing the roll of P.I.  “Life of P.I” is must see and an incredible theatric experience.  I give Life of P.I five stars out of five.  Life of P.I runs  September 3 – October 6, 2024.  DO NOT MISS THIS!!
