Had the opportunity for the 7th time to attend the opening/media day of the 6 time Tony Award winning musical, Disneys The Lion King https://www.mirvish.com/shows/the-lion-king (Mirvish https://www.mirvish.com ) at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W). A little bit of background, The Lion King musical debuted in 1997 and was based on the Disney animated feature of the same name that premiered in 1994. the show features music from Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice with additional music/lyrics Lebo M, Mark Mancini Jay Rifkin , Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer. Usually I talk about what the plot is about, but I feel EVERYONE has seen some version of The Lion King so I’ll talk about this recent production. From beginning to end this is a masterpiece of entertainment visually, musically and story. Every minute from the first note sung to the closing curtain will keep you mesmerized. The experience is not just on the stage, it’s in the isle, it’s behind the theatre , it’s above you, it’s in the balcony… something is happening all around you a some point during the show. The blend of actors with puppetry is stunning to watch and the familiar songs like Circle of Life, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, Can You Feel The Love Tonight and everyones favourite Hakuna Matata just makes it that much better. I can’t say enough about this production so my rating for Disney’s The Lion King musical, I give it 6 stars out of 5(yes its that good)! Disney’s The Lion King Musical runs until April 26th, 2025.
