Review on the Mirvish Production of “Matilda-The Musical”

Tuesday July 12th 2016.

Recently I was lucky enough to be at the opening of the Canadian Premier “Matilda The Musical” at the Ed Mirvish Theatre.  I was looking forward to seeing this Tony Award winning show since there was so much hype behind it and that I also had the opportunity to interview t  “Tim Minchin”, Music & Lyrics http://tinyurl.com/h2n5fmv .  Now I should explain, I’ve  never read the novel written by Roald Dahl and I also never saw the movie so I was going into this blind.  For those who (like me) don’t know anything about it here’s a quick summary I grabbed from the Mirvish website:

“The musical centers on the precocious title character, a young girl whose startling intelligence goes unnoticed by her horrible parents and even more horrible headmistress Miss Trunchbull. Fortunately help is at hand in the form of kind teacher Miss Honey, who helps Matilda realise her truly extraordinary potential.”

Ok now  that your up to speed, the cast of actors included young “Hannah Levinson” who plays the lead role on opening night ‘Matilda”, Hannah Levinson,Jaime Maclean,Jenna Weir rotate in the title role of “Matilda”.  “Brandon McGibbon & Darcy Stewart” were Matilda’s rotten to the core parents, “The Wormwoods”, “Keisha T. Fraser”, Matilda’s  sweet hearted Librarian “Mrs. Phelps”,  “Paula Brancati, Matilda’s kind teacher “Miss Honey” and  “Dan Chameroy” who portrays the Evil,Big Boned  Bully Headmistress “Miss Trunchbull”.  There are also Matilda’s classmates but there are too many actors/kids to mention.  So what did I think?  I thought the story had a good meaning behind it as i watched little Matilda deal with her bullies, from her parents to Miss Trunchbull.  I also enjoyed the message no matter what your size is you can fight back at bullies and win.  And also no matter who you are everyone is special in their own way. And don’t forget, if you believe in your dreams hard enough  they can come true.  The show moves very fast so you won’t get bored(especially if you’re bringing your kids) and yes it’s VERY kid friendly.  The music works perfectly with the story and  my favourite has to be Dan Chameroy ‘Miss Trunchbull”.  He’s perfectly evil.  But I should give an honorable mention to our star “Hannah Levinson”.  She has a great singing voice and commands the stage(and she’s only nine years old).  So if you’re looking for a musical that you can take the whole family, kids included then I highly recommend  “Matilda-The Musical”.  “Matilda-The Musical” runs until October 16th 2016.  www.mirvish.com/matilda/
