Review: Ain’t Too Proud (Mirvish)

Had the opportunity of attending the media night opening for the Tony award winning musical “Ain’t Too Proud (Mirvish)”  https://www.mirvish.com  at Toronto’s  CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre (244 Victoria St)  . Some background, this 2018 jukebox musical (a book by Dominique Morisseau) is based on the story of one of musics greatest R&B Soul groups of all time, Motowns “The Temptations”  https://www.temptationsofficial.com/#/  .  The real life plot surrounds the lives of  the original members Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks & David Ruffin from their days growing up on the rough streets of Detroit to joining the legendary record label Motown(with owner Berry Gordy & songwriters Smokey Robinson & Norman Whitfield), to becoming one of the biggest groups in the world to their personal heartbreaks and tragedies .  As someone who grew up listening to “The Temptations” because of my Father & older Brother and as a Music Reporter who interviewed the last living original member, “Otis Williams”, this musical is probably the most relatable and closest to me.  I’ve watched documentaries on The Temps, and a fan of the NBC mini series “The Temptations” , the story is pretty close to the truth.  The actors do an amazing job from their acting, dancing and of course singing.  And the legendary songs from “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” are unforgettable.   “Ain’t Too Proud (Mirvish)”  is about making dreams come true, breaking ground, tragedies , family, brotherhood and also the story of one of the greatest Record labels of all time, Motown.  I give “Ain’t To Proud (Mirvish)”  4 out of 5 stars.   “Ain’t Too Proud (Mirvish)”  runs until  December 17th, 2023.
