Had the opportunity of attending the media night opening for the Tony award winning stage show, “Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill the Musical” https://www.mirvish.com at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W). Some background, considered a “jukebox musical” and celebrated with music by Ottawa native and multi Juno/Grammy award winner Alanis Morissette https://alanis.com & songwriter Glen Ballard (the musical is inspired by her 1995 album of the same name), is Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and Tony-winning book by Diablo Cody. The story follows the lives of an upper class, seemingly perfect American suburban family who (each member) slowly unveils their personal inner trauma. So what did I think of this 2 and a half hour show (with intermission)? This is a very good, entertaining and emotional stage show. The story is a perfect compliment to the music and they both make sense together . In fact, it’s amazing to see how visually the stage show represents each song. It’s also a reminder on how good lyrically Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill was back in the mid 90’s. The show starts off slow but does build to the point I hated that there was an intermission and I had to wait to see the rest of it. Each character carries their own story that criss crosses each other to its climax. At moments it can be sad, then funny, then controversial, surprising and at the end satisfying . I give “Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill the Musical” (Mirvish) 3 and a half stars out of 5 and a definite must see.
