REVIEW: Les Misérables(MIRVISH)

Sunday March 31st, 2024

Had the opportunity of attending the media night opening for the Tony award winning musical Les Misérables  www.mirvish.com/shows/les-miserables   at Toronto’s  Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King Street West). Some background, the last time this timeless show was in the6 was in 2013.    Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862 and considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century.  It was also released as film in 2013.  The story(for 1st timers) is about an escape French convict  (in early 19th-century during the uprising known as the June Rebellion ,43 years after the French Revolution ) wants to put his criminal past behind him by becoming a respected member of the community. But his past haunts him as a police officer is determined to find him and bring him back to prison. As his life on the run wasn’t enough he is also taking care of a young girl who’s mother was forced into prostitution and died tragically.  I saw Les Misérables  in 2013 and wasn’t impressed. This time around I was mesmerized.  The quality of this musical is above and beyond from the actors incredible intertwining with each other to the dark and gloomy sets and costumes and the unforgettable songs including Dreamed a Dream., Master of the House and Do You Hear the People Sing.  There is a reason Les Misérables is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time.  And even though running time is almost 3 hours, it’s an incredible experience.   I give “Les Misérables(MIRVISH)”  4 and a half stars out of 5 .  “Les Misérables(MIRVISH)”  runs from March 26 – June 1, 2024.
