Review of “Hadestown”(Mirvish)

Sunday July 9th, 2023

Had the opportunity of attending the media night opening of one of the most unique stage shows I’ve ever seen,  the Broadway Tony and Grammy-winning Best Musical, “Hadestown”(Mirvish) https://tinyurl.com/mr35uxsk    at Toronto’s  Royal Alexandra Theatre (260 King St W). A little background, “Hadestown”(based on the book by author Anaïs Mitchell) is version of the ancient Greek myth story of “Orpheus and Eurydice” but visually and musically is staged in the American 1930’s Jazz era. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say if you don’t know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, make sure you do before seeing this or else you will be completely lost.  I’ll also say visually & musically it’s very unique(yes I’m using that word a second time) and amazing to watch as the 2 and a half hour story is told.  My absolute favourite Actor/Charactor is the deep voice Matthew Patrick Quinn(who plays the Lord of the Underworld “Hades”).  For me, he steals the show.  “Hadestown” is a very different type of musical that moves quickly and draws you in from beginning to end. I give “Hadestown” three and a half stars out of five.
