REVIEW OF “MEAN GIRLS” (MIRVISH)

Monday October 31st, 2022

Had the opportunity of attending the media night premiere of the musical, comedy “Mean Girls” (Mirvish) https://www.mirvish.com/shows/mean-girls  at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W).

The musical was written by Tina Fey (30 Rock), composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon), and producer Toronto’s Lorne Michaels (Saturday Night Live).  If you haven’t watched the original 2004 film Mean Girls (starring Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett , Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey & Tim Meadows) it’s about a teenager who was educated in Africa by her scientist parents, moves to Chicago and learns the hard way on what “clicks” are like in high school including involving herself with the very popular cool(but not so nice) elite group of students known as the Plastics.  Mean Girls is a burst of fun energy from beginning to the end.  There’s endless comedy, great and witty songs and the most dancing in a show I’ve seen in a long time.  Just an FYI, if you’re bringing someone young, the humor can be a bit raw but the show itself is “fetching fun”.
