Had the opportunity of attending the official premiere of the musical, romantic, comedy classic “Singing’ In The Rain” (Mirvish) https://www.mirvish.com/shows/singin-in-the-rain at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre (300 King St W).  I’ve been lucky enough to see the original 1952 film version starring Gene Kelly, Don Lockwood & Debbie Reynolds so it was very hard not to want to compare the film with this stage version.

If you don’t know the plot, it’s the late 1920’s and a Hollywood studio along with its two very famous romantic on screen silent film stars are dealing with a new type of movie making, “Talkies” .  One half to the team our male lead “Don Lockwood’(Sam Lips) is good enough to make the transition, his leading lady “Lina Lamont” (Faye Tozer) lets just say is better suited for the silent rolls.  To make this transition successful , the studio gets the help of an unknown talent “Kathy Seldon”  It’s a story of love, jealousy , truth and redemption. But the real fun is the singing and dancing as some of the most popular songs are part of this, including “”Broadway Melody”,   “Good Morning”, “Make ‘Em Laugh” & of course “Singin’ in the Rain”  .  So how does the stage version compare to the movie?  It’s actually not fair to compare. The film will always be a classic.  This stage performance is fun to watch ,the dance routines are tight, crisp & quick the comedy is hilarious and the singing is amazing.  And if you’re wondering about how they do the most famous scene  in the show and our lead sings “Singing In The Rain” (in The rain), I won’t give it away but you won’t bet disappointed. I give “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN” (MIRVISH) 3 and half stars out of 5.
